Farmers' Market - August 2020

The Merchant of Hoghton Farmers Market

Despite the challenging circumstances, and in line with the updated guidance, we continue  to open the gates to the Merchant of Hoghton Farmers’ Market with some important changes.

If you live near the Tower, think of us as your alternative open-air supermarket, with a range of fresh local produce and other goods.

You will be supporting many small enterprises as well as the Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust.

The market will of course be a different experience to the one we have all known to love since it was first established in 2000. We have worked hard to plan it with everyone’s safety in mind. We will need your help to make sure it works and can continue throughout these very challenging times.

An updated user’s guide to shopping at the Hoghton Tower’s Farmers Market in light of Covid-19

We have had to introduce social distancing measures. All we ask is that you adhere to these simple guidelines, designed to ensure that this remains a safe place to shop and work. We are all in this together, and we each have a vital role to play.

Here’s a quick guide:

·                  Online booking of a slot to visit the market is mandatory. This is the only way we can ensure that we do not have too many large crowds at any one time. Please do not walk up and expect to get in.  Tickets will be checked.

·                  Traders may have been repositioned to meet social distancing guidelines.

·                  There will be a very limited range of street food and coffee

·                  You may be asked to queue to enter the Market or at each stall so please be patient and keep your distance from eachother. If a stall gets too busy, you may be asked to come back when it’s less crowded.

·                  You will be actively asked to stand two metres apart from each other. There is still one way in and one way out but you can move freely in the market as long as you keep your distance.

·                  Be prepared to come, shop and leave within your allocated time slot. Service will be friendly but fast. Our traders usually love a chat, and they will again in the future, but for now speed and safety are of the essence. If you want, traders are all happy to take an order from you before the market to give you a more efficient pick-up.

·                  Please bring plenty of change or pay by contactless card if traders have the facility.

·                  Please don’t come in groups any larger than strictly necessary for you to buy the essentials you need. The fewer people here, the safer everyone will be.

·                  You are responsible for any young children or dogs (which must be on leads) in your group. Please consider whether it is safe to bring them and whether you can maintain the necessary social distancing requirements if you do.

·                  Please don’t linger to eat anything you buy here, no matter how nice a day it is. Enjoy it at home instead. Strictly no picnics allowed anywhere on site.

·                  Please be aware that there will be no toilets or waste disposal on site. The toilets are reserved for traders who will be here for a long time. Please do not litter and take all your rubbish away with you.

·                  Please try not to pick up and put down items of produce while you are shopping.

·                  Most importantly, ensure that you wash any uncovered purchases when you get home, and—of course—wash your hands thoroughly before and during food preparation.

·      Keep your distance,  but be kind and don’t be afraid to share a nod and a smile. We reserve the right to politely ask you to leave the market if you do not follow the rules. This is for everyone’s safety. It will be a new experience for all of us so let’s work together to make it work.

Our small, independent traders can provide you with the essentials you need to get you through these tough times. They in turn will be hugely appreciative of your support.
