Guided House Tours

Join one of our terrific tours and travel through time. Be entranced by the stories of a house and a family. The tours span almost 1000 years of history witnessed on this one, hill top site. From William the Conqueror through to modern times the Tower has witnessed the lives of the de Hoghton family and welcomed many famous visitors. It is said that some of these people still make their spectral presence felt on occasions around the house. Let our knowledgeable and friendly guides lead you through history at Hoghton Tower.

The guided tour lasts about one hour and fifteen minutes and includes the State Bedroom, the Ballroom and magnificent Banqueting Hall as well as a host of other rooms, all with their own amazing stories. You will also get the opportunity to view our fantastic new projection all about the visit of King James I in 1617 which was funded through the Culture Recovery Fund.

The tour does not include the Underground Passages or Well House as standard, however, if you wish to visit this intriguing part of the house, please purchase an additional ticket to extend your tour by another 20 minutes. Please make sure that you book this for the same session as your tour ticket.

Tours start promptly at the time booked, please arrive a few minutes before your advertised start time to allow time to walk from the car park and to book in.

This ticket allows you free access to the walled gardens (last entry to the gardens 3:30pm / 2:30pm in October).

Please note that on the 3rd Sunday of every month we hold our popular Farmers' Market. On these days a site admission fee of £2 per car / pedestrian bubble will be payable on entry for all visitors. On special event days other site admission fees may be payable. Please see www.hoghtontower.co.uk for dates and details any special events before booking your house tour.

The starting point for the tour is accessed either via two flights of stone steps without a handrail or, alternatively, a single flight of narrower stones steps with a handrail. The tour itself involves a number of flights of stairs and different, sometimes, uneven floor surfaces. Please be aware that unfortunately, prams / pushchairs are not permitted on the house tour. For more information, please refer to the Facilities and Access page on our website.

Online tickets are available to book until 10am on the day of the visit (subject to availability). After this time, any remaining tickets can be purchased at the ticket office on site. These are strictly subject to availability.

By booking one of our tours you are helping to raise funds to help the Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust (Registered Charity: 508357) preserve this beautiful historic building and its ground so that generations to come can continue to enjoy this unique piece of Lancashire's heritage. Thank you.
